What to Know About Your Cycle Tour

Just a few important things to know before your cycle tour.

At Bike Fiordland, we are working “backstage” to ensure you are well supported on your trip.

Start of your tour
If you are bringing your own bikes, you need to get them and all your luggage to the ferry across Lake Wakatipu. Please consider this in your planning when you book your previous night’s accommodation in Queenstown. If you need to book a bike taxi to get your bikes to the Steamer Wharf, we can help with that.

Our driver-guide will meet you at Walter Peak Station, adjust your hire bikes to fit, give you a briefing on the route ahead and expected weather conditions and do a check of everyone’s day kit. We want to be satisfied that all have the essential gear for the day. Part of doing our best to look after your well being and help you all have the best day possible.

The guide and van will remain near you on the cycle route for this first day, available to support cyclists incase of any difficulties.

The route on this first day lies in a remote area which is outside of cell phone network coverage. To provide communication in an emergency, our van carries an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) which can alert emergency services. Each group will be issued with a communication device, either hand-held PLB (personal locator beacon) which can directly alert emergency services, or a hand held radio to communicate with our van.

Duration of the tour
All groups must have a minimum of one cell phone operating so we can contact each other in emergencies.

Finish of tour
We will pick you up at the Kingston Cafe, for transport to Queenstown. We may have several groups sharing this van transport. Included in your price is delivery to either the airport or your accommodation.
If you are planning to fly out of Queenstown on the same evening, please don’t book any flight earlier than 7pm. Although we will often be in Queenstown by 5pm, due to the different speeds people cycle, we can’t guarantee arrival at the airport before 6pm.
